Biographies

Louis P. Karol

Louis P. Karol graduated "with distinction" from George Washington University in 1980 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration (accounting with Distinction). In 1984 he received his Juris Doctor degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. In 1989 he received his L.L.M. degree in Taxation from the New York University School of Law. Mr. Karol is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Mr. Karol is licensed to practice law in New York and his application to practice law in Connecticut is pending. He is admitted to practice in the United States Tax Court.

Mr. Karol has lectured extensively on estate planning and taxation and has also authored articles for professional trade magazines.

Mr. Karol is a member of the New York State Bar Association and its Section on Trusts and Estate Law. Mr. Karol is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a Board member of the Long Island Chapter of the International Association of Financial Planning, a member of a number of Charitable Giving Committees such as The American Cancer Society and Family Services Association and a member of the Nassau County Council on Estate Planning. Mr. Karol is a past Adjunct Professor at Long Island University - C.W. Post Campus. Mr. Karol is also a member of the Board of Directors of a leading Long Island publicly traded company.

Howard L. Sosnik

Howard L. Sosnik graduated from Bucknell University in 1980 with an undergraduate degree in accounting. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1984. In 1986 he received his L.L.M. degree in Taxation from the New York University School of Law. Mr. Sosnik has also passed the Certified Public Accounting examination.

Mr. Sosnik is licensed to practice law in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Georgia. He is also admitted to practice in the United States Tax Court.

Mr. Sosnik is currently President of the Board of Trustees for the Long Island Chapter of Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. He has been a member of the board since 2009.

Mr. Sosnik has lectured extensively on estate planning and taxation and has also authored tax articles for professional trade magazines. He has conducted educational seminars for attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors and teaches insurance courses for insurance professionals necessary to maintain CLE licensing. Mr. Sosnik has been a frequent guest on "Financially Yours," a radio show on WEVD-1050 AM, dealing with estate planning and business planning.

Mr. Sosnik is a member of the New York, New Jersey and Florida State Bar Associations, the New York State Bar Trusts and Estates Law Section, the Nassau County Council on Estate Planning and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Inc.

Brian Adelman

Brian Adelman graduated from Emory University in 1991 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1994. In June 1995 he was admitted to practice law in the State of New York. In July 1995 he was admitted to practice law in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Marc Alhonte (of counsel)

Marc Alhonte graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1975 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Philosophy. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Buffalo in 1979. Stanley Amelkin (of counsel)

Stanley has built a distinguished reputation for legal counsel in matters involving real estate transactions. He has practiced in the area of commercial real estate including the sale, purchase, financing and leasing of commercial and industrial property and the general field of landlord-tenant law. Stanley has represented many of the major real estate developers, tenants and brokers on Long Island in a broad array of sophisticated and complex real estate transactions including Industrial Development Agency transactions, land leases and tax-free exchanges. He brings an astute financial sense to real estate transactions with a reputation for finding simple solutions to complex real estate problems.

Stanley actively participates in legal as well as civic organizations. He is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association and has moved through the chairs of the Nassau Lawyers Association of Long Island culminating in the presidency of the organization. Stanley formerly chaired the Town of Huntington Zoning Board of Appeals where he was a member for thirteen years.

The New York State Office of Court Administration has conferred Attorney Emeritus status on Stanley. He also has been appointed by the Nassau County Supreme Court as an Arbitrator in attorney-client fee disputes.

Stanley has been awarded a Distinguished Rating for his professionalism and the quality of his legal work from Martindale Hubbell, the premier directory of legal professionals. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania and he earned his law degree from New York Law School. Stan is admitted to practice in the courts of New York, as well as the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern District, the United States Court of Military Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

Away from the practice of law, Stan is an avid bridge player and is a Bronze Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League. In addition, he completed the Classe Culinaire des Croisieres Workshop from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school.

Mr. Amelkin actively participates in legal as well as civil organizations, the Nassau County Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association.

Sheryl Bergstein

Sheryl Bergstein graduated Cum Laude from Tufts University in 1989 with a degree in psychology. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1992.

Renata Landskind

Renata Landskind, was born in Kiev, Ukraine and grew up in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. After graduating from St. John's University with a Criminal Justice major, she earned a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School. Since 2000, Renata has concentrated her practice of law in the areas of Elder Law, Estate Planning, and Trusts and Estates, with a focus on the Probate and Administration of Complex and Litigated Estates. Ms. Landskind regularly assists clients in planning for the preservation of assets in the face of catastrophic medical events and applying for and obtaining Medicaid for both in-home care and nursing home as a vehicle to both preserve those assets and take the burden off loved ones in a time of need. Her legal ability also extends to Asset Protection, Business Planning and Real Estate as well as estate planning for high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and real estate investors, whom she guides in the structuring and transfer of property to the next generation through the use of the most efficient and tax-effective methods available.

Ms. Landskind gained valuable Surrogate's Court experience working for the Counsel to the Public Administrator of Kings County for a number of years. Ms. Landskind draws on this expertise as she represents spouses, heirs, trustees, and executors in will and trust contests, accounting proceedings, fiduciary removal actions, kinship proceedings, and the successful probate of lost wills, among other Surrogates Court actions.

Ms. Landskind regularly appeared on the live cable television show "Ask the Lawyer," a production of the Prayer Channel (now NET). In addition, she has been a guest speaker at several New York State Bar Association estate-planning and elder law events held at various health care facilities and senior centers.

Brenda M. Lynch

Brenda is an attorney working in the law firm of Karol & Sosnik's Trust and Estate Department. Her practice has focused on Estate Administration, Elder Law, Estate Planning and closely related areas from the very beginning of her legal career.

Brenda's focus is on representing fiduciaries and beneficiaries of a trust or an estate. She has over 21 years of experience advising fiduciaries (Executors and Trustees) on the duties and responsibilities of being a fiduciary. She also represents beneficiaries in ensuring that they receive the assets that they are entitled to in a timely fashion from an estate and/or trust. She also works with our Trust and Estate Litigation Department when matters cannot be resolved amicably.

Brenda earned her law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1997. She is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey. She is a member of the New York City, Nassau County and New York State Bar Associations. In addition, she is a member of the New York State Bar Association Elder Law Section's Subcommittee on Mediation. This organization focuses on alternative dispute resolution in guardianship and contested surrogate matters.

While attending law school, she interned for the Brooklyn Legal Services, Department of the Aging and Brooklyn Law School's Elder Law Clinic. She was also the recipient of an Everett Fellowship, which allowed her to work with the Samuel Sadin Institute on Law of the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College.

Brenda derives a great deal of personal and professional satisfaction from working closely with seniors and their families during some of the most difficult periods of lives - the loss of a loved one. "My goal is to make the many duties involved in settling an estate as stress-free and efficient as possible for my clients."

Terence J. Ricaforte

Terence J. Ricaforte, grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. After graduating from Manhattan College with a B.S. in Business Administration, he earned a J.D. from New York Law School. Since 2008, Terence has primarily practiced in the areas of Elder Law, Estate Planning, Probate and Estate Administration, Estate Litigation, Medicaid Planning, Real Estate, Tax and Business Succession Planning.

Mr. Ricaforte started his legal career as an attorney with the Miami Dade State Attorneys Office. He became an Assistant State Attorney in 2006 and prosecuted misdemeanor and felony crimes through at least 15 jury and numerous bench trials. Mr. Ricaforte then returned home to New York to be closer to family and friends.

Using the litigation and trial experience he developed as an assistant State's Attorney, he was able to build a niche practice of Estate Litigation. Mr. Ricaforte has handled jury trials, contested probate, administration and accounting proceedings, discovery proceedings, contested power of attorneys, fraudulent transfer issues, tax litigation and contested real estate matters. His vast experience in all forms of estate and elder law litigation has made him a proficient estate and elder law planner due to his knowledge of all of the issues that can arise as a result.

In his spare time Mr. Ricaforte is a Mentor for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program and has helped raise funds for the American Heart Association. Mr. Ricaforte is an accredited attorney with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mr. Ricaforte is a member of the New York State Bar Association.

Marie Elizabeth Villefranche graduated Cum Laude from CUNY: Hunter College in 2003 with a Bachelors Degree in History.
